Tesco has new vegan meals!

As much as I love cooking sometimes time, energy or inspiration just doesn’t allow for it. Going to the supermarket in my experience when in this sort of mood has usually led to a disappointing bowl of rice and a Bombay potato pot. That’s why like so many vegans I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Tesco’s new range of Wicked Kitchen.

The range includes such delicacies as BBQ Mushroom Sourdough Pizza, Carrot Pastrami Spiced Wrap, Moroccan Inspired Bowl and BBQ Butternut Mac.

I took to my local Tesco and picked up a couple to try.

First impressions were promising! Both dishes were well presented and laid out so that you can see all the elements nicely and they looked fresh and vibrant compared to many ready meals I’ve seen.

I was excited at the prospect of being only 3-4 minutes away from what I hoped to be instant vegan. At £4 each they better be good! I tried the beans first.

This one was actually my favourite of the two. The tastes were different to dishes I would normally make at home and BBQ is usually a very meat heavy concept. The beans were rich, flavourful and had tangy little slices of mushroom which was a nice surprise. The red cabbage slaw added a nice freshness and crunch. The butternut squash mash was amazing! I wish there had been more of it. It was smooth and buttery and even slightly cheesy tasting. To be honest I’ve not been able to stop thinking about the mash… That’s probably quite sad.

Next I tried the chana masala.

Oooo 🙂

As it cooked a spiced, buttery smell filled the kitchen. I couldn’t wait to tuck in! When cooked the colours were still vibrant and appetising. The textures were all different and brought interest to the dish. I loved the secret greens underneath! The flavours felt really authentic and traditional and each part had a different flavour. I would have liked more curry as it was a little out of proportion to the amount of rice you got.

I’ve tried some of the sandwiches, both pizzas and the spaghetti bolognese and I’ll be slowly making my way through the rest! If you haven’t tried them already you should go out and get one.
